On the other hand if you are living a lonely life, a life which is stressed out, a life where you don't have time to do what you want to really do, where you are running around with no idea where you are heading to, a life which has been full of problems and self abuse, a life you feel that did not do justice to you, a life where you felt betrayed by others, cheated by others, abused by others or vice-versa then again you've got a friend in me who understands what you are going through because sometime back he was also on the same boat.

To tell you the truth, whatever the circumstances that prevails in our life as of today, we have the capacity to change it for the better or the worse. The choice is actually in our hands and only our hands. I have understood this from my practical experience with life so far. I would be happy to share with you everything that I have learned so that I can motivate you towards a fuller life in any of the ways that is possible. This can be done because the biggest truth is that we are all interconnected to each other as everything in this universe is part of a single system and all of us in some ways or the other shape and reshape each other's life. It's an illusion of the mind to see everything separately. We have smaller systems in the system but ultimately there is only one system that is the universe.

Something happening at one place has a forbearing in some other part of the world and therefore all of us are interconnected to each other and either we have a choice to make our life better along with that of others or we have a choice to make our life worse along with that of others. Anyway nothing goes on in isolation. Everything is interconnected to one another.

A friend is somebody who can influence somebody's life in a positive way without any ulterior motive or expectation. A true friend works with a larger purpose in life to make a positive and dynamic change in his or her life as well as others who are associated with him or her.

For the past nine years I have lived a fairly solitary existence, save for the company of my daughter and small dog.

My daughter left to set up home with her boyfriend last June and I naturally found the house rather quiet after she had left and, although quite happy in my solitude, missed the usual female sounds, smells and general chatter around the house.

The Internet has changed all that. There is a bewildering array of social networking sites and on-line dating agencies which cover literally everything for all tastes, orientation, creed, age, et al. For me, the important one is age because my generation were in their late forties when the Internet exploded onto the scene and have had to adapt to the new technology rather than having been brought up with it. For most adults of my age this meant, amongst other things, learning to type and in a lot of cases - the alphabet. I wondered if there would be enough candidates with a grasp of this technology to enable a choice. Fears allayed in following paragraphs.

I really took pot luck on which agency to choose, so plumbed for what seemed to be a fairly straight forward outfit, catering for the over fifties and majoring on friendship and dating as apposed to others offering instant sex and/or guaranteed marital bliss for ever after. I thought I would try it for free, but soon realized that you cannot open or access mail, in its various forms, unless you sign up and pay for full membership.This is not a con as whilst free, you get ample opportunity to wander around the site and get a feel for it, and other members who are interested in your photographs and profile can let you know that they are, but you cannot respond until you pay up. So I paid up - no problem, Its less than 25p a day and a lot more fun than half a pint of milk!

Initially I was astounded at the sheer number of ladies on the site that matched my search criteria and resided within a 50 mile radius of my own dwelling. I took a compass to a map and transcribed a circle upon it and was amazed at the number of major conurbations that it encompassed, and this also included a large chunk of the North Sea. Not wishing to be greedy, my search radius is now 25 miles, still 50 miles between the borders of my territory - I felt power and conquest surging through my veins!

I will just suggest that you are honest, because you are going to arrange to meet someone in the flesh at some stage, but if you describe oneself as 6 foot and have a profile photo taken in the distant past, but you are actually 5' 6" and now have an exceedingly wide parting in your hair, you will fail. Similarly with the ladies, describing oneself as medium build then getting stuck in a carver on the date, will lead nowhere. My profile is a little down beat, for example I rejected all of the photographs that my daughter thought would be good and chose one that I felt did not do me any favours but age accurate. Its nice to get a compliment like 'you're taller than I imagined' or 'your photograph doesn't do you justice', its a great start and It is also gratifying to be able to return a compliment.

Even with all the modern communication wizardry at my disposal, I found the telephone to be the most satisfying medium, both to get a better feeling for the type of person you are interested in, and also to arrange dates and meetings. I know it is not advised, but I have been quite liberal in giving out my number but leaving it up to the recipient as to if and when they reciprocate. I have had no problems with this method and have enjoyed many a good chin wag during these long winter evenings.

On-line dating has been a very pleasant experience for me and am fairly close to establishing a permanent bond with someone I have met on-line. Strangely enough, she was the very first person who sent me a wink, and although we have both dated other members, it looks like we may be leaving the site soon to pursue our romance.

I sat thinking of how Bill O'Reilly only the night before had tried to dismiss a story only because it was found on the internet. The anti-social nature of drug addiction results in a "Life-Style". The addict becomes out-of-sync with the social structure in which he must live. Addicts begin to associate only with other addicts or drug dealers and then transcend into the subculture of drug use. Paranoia triggered by many different things, and at many different levels, causes the addict to become less and less comfortable around anyone who is not doing the same as they are, partially because they are becoming criminals as well as addicts. Over a period of time, addiction requires particular justification, and rationalization to live with the results that it is producing. Gradually, these ego-defense mechanisms morph into an Anti Society philosophy created from "distorted thinking". As the addict becomes more dysfunctional they inevitably go so far outside of the laws of society that they assume a profile that is easily identifiable, and as a result they get arrested. Usually, the crime factor progresses as the addiction progresses and the distorted thinking progresses. A completely changed set of principles, morals and beliefs is adopted. Unfortunately, this is usually gradual to the point of becoming a long-term, overall behavioral change.

The addiction progresses as the "Brain Chemistry" changes. As the brain chemistry changes the behavior changes. As the behavior changes the entire personality changes. Much of the change in brain chemistry has far reaching effects that are not easily overcome or reversed. The chemistry changes are in "Neurotransmitters", which are at the heart of the relationship between the brain and the rest of the "Central Nervous System". Specifically, lowered Dopamine levels are personality changers. Dopamine affects hunger, sleep, emotions and even the "body clock". In their search for "Euphoria" craving for the drug-of-choice becomes incessant.

Sadly, this craving becomes less easily satisfied. As the brain changes, the drug is less capable of producing the same effects that it had on the brain before the changes. The addict literally has a "different brain". The addict then is "chasing" the feeling that they originally derived from use of the drug. The problem is that the drug can no longer produce the feeling that the addicts' memory has branded. Eventually the addict loses the "high" and is now just trying to get "well" or feel "normal". As time progresses it takes more and more of the drug, that can no longer satisfy, to fulfill the needs or desires of the user. As the addict becomes more dysfunctional and the amount of the drug needed increases, the ability to obtain it becomes harder and requires methods that are almost alway illegal. More serious criminal behavior is adopted to obtain the amount of money needed to get the increasingly greater amount of the needed drug. The "Circle of Addiction" becomes "Life". Need for the drug is followed by obtaining the money for the drug. This in-turn, is followed by obtaining the drug, and using the drug. Satisfaction decreases and the need increases. More drugs inspire more crime, and more crime results in more "time"... Life has become the drug-of-choice! Detoxification from the drug usually only happens after being arrested for a crime and being forcefully removed from the environment where the drug is accessible. Detoxification is most often the easy part for an addict. The chemistry changes in the brain that have been paralleled by behavior and personality changes, are not easily reversible. The drug is removed from the scenario but the distorted thinking has been "hardwired" into the addicts' brain in the form of an anti-social belief system. Incarceration only adds to the dysfunction because jails and prisons also have an anti-social belief system in place, of their own, developed by criminals of all kinds. This sick addict, whose ability to think is very poor, easily succumbs to the belief system in place wherever he is incarcerated, only too easily. As the length of terms of incarceration increases with the severity of crimes committed, the length of time outside of incarceration decreases, and criminal behavior becomes as strong and as much of a problem as addictive behavior. Combined, they are a very difficult state of being to change. Very few people, if any, have the ability to make the needed changes on their own, if they are truly an addict.

Some form of structured and rehabilitative "Help" becomes a necessity if the addict is ever to return to being able to function in society. Strict rules and routines are needed. Acceptance of the need for help is important. It's important because the nature of addiction is that it produces "denial" of the "problem". Coming out from under the distorted thinking is nearly impossible because the "brain" is the most severely affected part of the person that has become an "Addict"! 12-Step programs and a limited number of Christian based programs are the only source of help that is not expensive beyond the financial capability of most addicts and their families. Acceptance becomes the "key" factor for Recovery from this dread disease. Frequently multiple episodes of formal treatment are the only solution or answer. Yes, multiple episodes, because "Relapse" into addiction is usually inevitable as a result of how complicated this problem is. Physiology, psychology and even pharmacology may all factor into treatment of this chronic, progressive, and fatal disease. The 12-step program's fundamental requirement of "Acceptance" has produced "Miracles", but should we rely on miracles to solve our country's greatest problem? Treatment in a controlled environment enables the addict to more easily discover and realize the need to identify and "accept" that they need to change their primary way of thinking, and behavior. In treatment, this reality is also reinforced by "peers" who share a common problem. This "acceptance" must be complete and must be constantly reinforced over a long period of time. Its much easier to do when those around you have to do the same thing. You don't become an addict overnight and you can't Recover overnight. Before an addiction is properly addressed, it has usually developed over a period of many years, sometimes even decades. It is hard for a human being to accept that a great portion of life has been thrown away. Shame, guilt and fear that come with sobriety and the restoration of the thinking process, are common complications for the addict. These feelings are so difficult to deal with, that they are often regarded as the primary cause of relapse into using. Acceptance of defeat is also a stumbling block, because no one likes losing. Thus it becomes crucial to move past the defeat and focus on the accomplishment of becoming "Sober". "Sobriety" is a term commonly used in both AA and NA in regard to abstention from both alcohol and other drugs. Narcotics Anonymous declares regularly, in their meetings, that "Alcohol is a drug, period". Most alcoholics of the older generation resent this claim. Current knowledge supports the NA declaration and acknowledges that all are mood altering substances. Acceptance of this idea is crucial, because most "drug addicts" begin a relapse with the use of alcohol, often deceiving their selves into believing alcohol is not a drug so they'll be able control us of it.

Every once in a while you run into a spoilt MySpace creature. This one has been bugged by so many people online that they now claim to only add people they know. If they see your display picture and don't recognise you, they'll deny your request to make a connection. Yes, and you guessed it, they won't visit your profile either.

By sending a private message along with your request, you automatically get a second chance to have them visit your page. No one can resist checking a personal message written to them.

This was a pretty crazy trick I first noticed in Facebook and Bebo. It works on MySpace's "Friend Updates" module too. So listen carefully.

Every time you change something on your profile, your current list of contacts sees an alert telling them about the latest changes that you made to your profile. MySpacers often delete one of their own photos and then upload it again. Guess why?

Whenever they put the photo up again, all of their contacts will see a preview of it on their own profiles. This is a naughty trick that gets their friends to visit or revisit the profile to see the "new" photo. That rekindles interest from people who added them before but didn't maintain a relationship.

By using Process Explorer, you can also see what programs are using most of the CPU's processing. This is another cause for slow computers to occur because of the fact that a program is drawing all the attention from the CPU. In order for other applications to function, highly intensive programs need to be either run by themselves or run on a computer with a higher CPU speed. A lot of graphic applications such as Video Editors and Graphics Editors tend to require a lot of processing.

So to answer the question: "Why Does My Computer Run So Slow?" means for you to understand what processes are running and which are necessary. It is equally important to understand which programs require a lot of intensive processing. Now I'm not saying this is a means to an end, rather it is a start in trying to troubleshoot your computer issues. Imagine the horror on my sister's face when she went to check up on her 8 year old daughter and stumbled in to see her watching a man and a woman having sex on the computer. The dangers of the internet are real and it is easy for children to be victims of the times we live in.

I have three tips for you today that can keep you and your family safe from the threats lurking on the internet. I strongly urge you to take action and implement these 3 tips today to protect your children and make their internet experience a safe one.

Tip #1

Move the family computer to a location in the house where it is easy to keep an eye on everyone. This is very important, especially for young kids. There are pre-defined filters to block pornography, illegal activity, or any adult related material. In addition to these pre-defined filters, you can custom build filters to block any type of material or any specific site that you wish. I like the moderate filter the best as it blocks pornography and illegal activity sites such as gambling and phishing sites. OpenDNS comes with a stat package letting you know the sites that were blocked along with stats letting you know how much time everyone is spending online.

One of my favorite features of OpenDNS is the ability to upload a custom image that is displayed when someone accesses a blocked site. Imagine the shock on little Donnie's face when he sees a picture of mom and dad with a message, "You know better than to try to go on this site. Turn off the computer and go to your room!".

OpenDNS is a powerful application and I encourage you to check it out. It is 100% free and works about as good as any other product I've used to block sites.

Sit down and have a talk with your kids. Your kids need to know the dangers of going online and especially meeting and chatting with people. With all the social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and the new chat roulette, there are many places for predators to hang out and prey on children. By communicating openly with your children, they will feel safe and feel they can come to you with anything that happens.

Have you ever had thoughts like these? I'm sure every parent has. So, what to do?

How can you get your children to help out around the house - and maybe even enjoy it?

Last Friday, a parent in my daughter's first grade class asked me the following question:

"I'm thinking of giving my son some responsibility
or 'chores' to teach him responsibility for himself and others and property. Do
you have any ideas on what would be appropriate for a 6 year old?....."

Ahhh...creating a responsible child. YES, I think giving children responsibility
at an early age is fantastic! If you haven't started giving your children
responsibility, start NOW!!

Children love to have structure in their lives, they may not always act like they
do, but studies have shown that structure and responsibility are actually two
things that children crave in their daily lives. You can start as early as 18
months of age with responsibility. Now I know that many of you are thinking,
Tammi is crazy, how can an 18 month old learn responsibility? An example of this
is when your child is done playing with something ask them to help you pick it
up. If there are blocks laying on the floor, say, 'Can you help mommy put one
block in the box?' Show them what you mean and have them follow your example.
Once your child has done this once, make a big deal out of it. Praise them, clap
for them, give them a high five or a hug. Have fun with the fact that your child
just listened to you and helped you pick up a toy. You not only can use this time
as a time for when you are teaching responsibility, but a general time for
teaching. For example, 'Can you pick up a toy that has red on it and put it in
your basket?' Not only are they cleaning up, but they are working on color,
number, shape recognition as well. Make a game out of learning and your child
will pick up not only their toys, but essential academics as well.

For children that are older, play the 'I Spy' game with them. If their room is a
mess, go up there with them and say 'I spy something green'. When they pick up
the green item, say yes and have them put it away. Then have your child spy
something for you to pick out and pick up. Simple game you can play with your
child and you get the room cleaned up all at the same time. The key to having a
responsible child is having expectations for them. Are they always going to do
what is asked of them? No, but always including them in family duties, not only
teaches them responsibility, but really makes them feel like they are a part of
the family and that they are important to you. The bonus here is that you get to
spend more time with your child in a positive way.

Here is a list of possible ideas fro you to have your children help you with:

4 year olds and younger:

* Putting toys away (even if at first it is only a few)

* helping you put silverware away. Give them the spoons to put in the drawer. (
of course most will not end up in the right place at first, but that is ok)

* Have them help you with dinner (putting dry ingredients into a recipe)

* Have them put away kitchen wash towels or rags in the drawer that they can reach

* Have them put non breakable items (Fruit ) into the refrigerator after grocery
shopping.

* Have them get diapers or wipes that you may need for changing a younger sibling

* Have them push in the chairs after dinner

* Give them a broom and ask them to sweep ( Again they won't be good at it, but
praise them, they are trying and that is what is most important)

5 years old and up:

* Increase the frequency in which they are responsible for things

* Put their dirty dishes on the counter or rinse them off in the sink

* Set the table (Have all the plates, utensils, cups, etc. out for them and have
them set the table)

*Have them sweep after dinner

*Empty part or all of the dishwasher or put clean dishes away after they are
washed

* Feed a pet water or food

* Clean up their dirty laundry and make sure that it is put in the proper place

* Have them make their own bed (It may not look like what you want it to, but fix
it later after they have left the room)

* Have them put away their backpack and coat after school

* Have them get their clothes out for school the next day

* Give them a Clorox wipe and have them wipe down the bathroom counters

* Give them a rag with dusting product on it and have them dust all the furniture
at their level

The list is endless, be creative and mix it up from time to time.

I have found with my own kids that they more I involve them in my daily
activities, the more they are willing to help me out and not put up a fight. The
other night we were talking to our older two daughters (11 ½ and 10) and said
once a week, we wanted them to help clean up the kitchen after dinner. Well our
youngest daughter (7 yr. old) and she too wanted in on the action. While her
oldest sister bailed out on them, she helped our 10 year old clean up the entire
kitchen. They even put the extra food in the fridge with saran wrap on it. We
told both girls how proud we were of them and how special they just made us feel
to do something so nice for us. They were beaming from ear to ear. Later that
night, my husband was going to wipe up the bathroom floor and our youngest cam in
and said she wanted to do it, so there she was on her hands and knees scrubbing
up that bathroom floor. She did a great job and we were so proud of her, there
was lots of praise and hugs and kisses. Now would I expect this of her weekly or
daily? No, but I was so proud of her and more importantly, she was proud of
herself.

I know that kids need expectations put on them. Will they always welcome this?
No, but they actually do expect this from their parents. Today too many parents
want to be friends with their children and to make their lives as easy as
possible. Unfortunately this is not the real world that they will one day live
in. Have expectations for your children and help make them responsible people.

I was working the over night shift at a little convenience store in Rockland Maine. The 11pm-7am shift sees very few customers with a few exceptions. The pizza delivery guy gassing up at the end of his shift, the alcoholic trying to get you to sell him that last twelve pack and he can't even walk straight. That is the first few hours. Then there is a lull until around 3 in the morning when the paper deliveries start and then the shift changeovers at the various companies that run all night.

The only regulars during this whole time are the local police officers, sheriffs, and state police officers. They come in for a cup of coffee, a few scratch off tickets, tobacco, etc. Usually they stick around for a bit and make chit chat. One evening I asked a sheriff how his evening was going and he said," It's quiet, there is absolutely nothing going on". Of course I replied, " That's good isn't it". He said no. He would rather have something to do. Now in my mind I am thinking, in order for you to have something to do that means that someone has to be committing some sort of crime. This got me thinking...is a crime free society not only possible, but desirable. So, I asked him, "Wouldn't it be nice if there was no crime"?; Is that not the ultimate goal of any society. He didn't seem to like that idea, because then he would be out of a job. I can understand that position, no one wants to be out of work. A point that is ringing loudly in our current economy.

It is a strange thing to think that if a crime free society were in our reach, would it actually be a good thing? Think of how many people would be unemployed. The majority of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies would no longer be needed. Each jurisdiction only maintaining a skeleton crew on the off chance that a crime did occur. The idea of it seems counter intuitive, because so many people out of work...one would think would eventually lead to crime.

A correlation can be made between unemployment and a spike in crime. I for one believe that as a society we must evolve, and do continually from generation to generation. Ideally one would think that it may be possible in some far off distant future that we could possibly get to a point where crime was obsolete. Wishful thinking, but for the sake of argument I would like to consider this possibility. Crime is bad, we have law enforcement to see to it that criminals are dealt with. One would think it would be a good thing if crime went away. And yet it seems, we cannot live without crime, because it would seem that it is a vital part of our economy and our way of life. Criminals see to it that people are kept employed and as long as they are out committing crimes than business is good. When a person commits a crime, it impacts some one else negatively. At the same time others are benefiting from that same crime. "One mans loss is another mans gain," so to speak.

All of this leads me to the conclusion that crime is fought half heartidly. We want to do a good enough job to keep it under control, but we do not want to eliminate it all together. Not that we could, in reality crime and criminals will always exist. I just find it interesting that in the end, even if we could eliminate crime, we wouldn't want to. Our society may be able to live without it, but our economy could not. And as for the criminals of the world, we may want to treat them with a bit more respect. After all they are doing their best to keep a great many people employed. That is a morbid thought, especially when you get into the particularly horrific crimes. The ones that inevitably end up tearing a family apart or scaring a victim for life. I guess in the end its just one of those conundrums that we have to live with in this world. That in the end even some good can and does come from a bad thing....even if not for some but for others.

Since his teens, he had masturbated nearly every night before going to sleep and sometimes once or twice during the day as well. He was shy in school and dated infrequently, partly from his feelings of inadequacy from the persistent inability to concentrate, multiple failures, disapproval from parents, teachers and peers and the consequent demoralization that contributed to low self-esteem.

Undergraduate school had been difficult for him. Complex mathematical formulations from his economics courses were tape-recorded while he fantasized about looking under the girl's shirt who sat next to him. He was chronically late at classes, his dorm was messy and his clothes were disheveled. He seemed to live in another world. Once on the job, he loved the thrill, excitement and risk of being a trader, but when he had to sit in boardrooms to listen to his bosses talk about strategy, his "eyes glazed over" with boredom and he entered into an "erotic haze". He would fantasize about the escort he had been with the night before and anticipated getting home after a long day to get on the chat rooms and look at pornography on the internet.

His days were the usual business of forgetting assignments and people's names, of losing things and being chastised by bosses, as he had been by parents, for not being able to sit still or follow directions. At home, he felt empty, depressed and lonely. He was unable to focus on a book or a movie. He often felt different than others. It was as though others were given a chip at birth that allowed them to remember simple things, to process information accurately, to complete tasks in an orderly fashion, to moderate their impulses and calm their bodies and mind when they wanted to. But Brian knew he was "different" from them. His girlfriend complained that he interrupted their conversations and that he always put his needs first from; He could never finish a task that wasn't engrossing for him. He would lose his temper over trivial things and he didn't know why. On the internet, however, looking at a montage of erotic images, he finally felt not scattered. Moreover, he felt soothed, whole and unafraid. Like a magic elixir, he would immediately feel "not different". He felt alert, focused and alive. However, he soon found himself in job performance because of the long nights and weekends of compulsive sexing. He went to a 12-step "S" program and learned to stay away from compulsive sex. He married and got a promotion at work. Time passed as he worked his 12-step program and settled in to marriage. However, the impulse to call an escort or make an erotic phone call never went away.

One day, after two years of abstinence, he ran across an escort in a hotel who offered him her services and he could not think of a reason to refrain. Also, he had realized that his fantasies had taken on a distinct sadomasochist flavor and he had been curious about acting them out with this woman. He had been involved in a deal at work that went wrong and he felt "less than" and somewhat ashamed. Memories of shaming and humiliating remarks about his conduct and learning skills from teachers and parents came flooding back, precipitating his masochistic sexual fantasies. His sense of self was completely destabilized. So he did what had always worked for him when he felt psychologically fragmented: he went to an escort to shore up his fragile self esteem. Once again he would miraculously feel like he could live with himself. The non-stop put downs that had taken up permanent residence in his head were quieted, at least for a short period of time. Sex took the edge off like a few martinis do for an alcoholic.

The "quick fix" however, was followed by a crash which made him feel worse than he did before he went to the escort. Knowing he had once again lost control of himself, he would feel extremely remorseful and depressed. His feelings about himself bordered on self-loathing. After the crash, he no longer felt alert, focused, or euphoric. While Brian had been able to walk away from cocaine three years ago, the sex addiction had remained entrenched in his psyche: like an athlete's foot of the mind -- it called him -- incessantly-- an itch to be scratched but never soothed.

It was at this point that Brian decided that if he didn't leave the house, he would not frequent escorts, and so he re-discovered the Internet. In no time at all, Vincent was spending untold minutes, hours, days totally absorbed in the internet, using chat rooms to set up erotic encounters, and exploring the fetishistic and S&M images and enticements of the cybersex world. Porn surfing became his medium of acting out because the images were flashy, intense, and risky and he could easily go to another web page when the novelty wore off and he would start to be bored.

What happened with Brian's recovery? He seemed to have managed to avoid compulsive sex for a period of time and to make some positive changes in his life. But when faced with the opportunity, he was easily led to return to sex addiction.

In Brian's case, he was not able to get a handle on his sex addiction because he had not been diagnosed and treated for Adult Attention Deficit Disorder. A particular constellation of imbalanced neurotransmitters were creating physical and emotional problems for him, including an inability to regulate attention, control impulses, sleeping, and mood and energy levels. His need to self-medicate his impulsivity, restlessness and mental hyperactivity gave way to using sexually compulsive behaviors to try to fix his brain chemistry. Poor impulse control combined with a drive for high-risk, intense, novel experiences contributed to Brian's addiction to sex.

Many sexual compulsives with ADD have had experiences like Brian's. They struggled in school because they got bored or had a hard time paying attention. Once bored, they would stare out the window, often caught up by sexual fantasies. As adults, relationships are difficult for them. Impulses carry them from project to project, relationship to relationship, job to job. Their minds come screeching to a halt as they try to remember a friend's name or the location of the escort they visited last night. Most feel the self-loathing of people who are working under capacity, and experience the pain and grief of living a life of lost opportunities and diminished personal potential.

Deregulation and Deprivation

Deregulation and impulsiveness are the hallmarks of ADD, as well as the hallmark of sex addiction. Unable to set boundaries on their own behavior, ADDers feel an intense need to continue forever whether it is on a work project or an involvement in a sexual enactment. One definition of compulsion may very well be "a loss of control characterized by an intense desire to continue despite adverse consequences."

A sense of deprivation then emerges when compulsive sexualizing does not provide the gratification and satisfaction that results from having the experience of natural pleasure as it relates to intimacy with another human being. Rather than sex being a way to bring two people closer, sexual enactments for the ADDer can stem from intra-psychic conflict, from a narcissistic need for validation not received in his child's ADD world, and as a way to medicate the physiological symptoms of brain chemistry deregulation. The result is that sex takes up a disproportionately large place in his psychic equilibrium. His very sense of self depends on his sexuality.

Deprivation is not a feeling that is comfortable for the ADD/sex addict. He is a bottomless pit of needs, always looking ahead and never feeling satisfied. The simpler pleasures of life are too mild. Risky, novel, intense and mysterious experiences such as those provided by Internet porn match his voracious appetite. Sex with a spouse seems banal. Marriages are ruined. Unfortunately, trying to feed the monster of endless needs makes the need grow larger and more insistent so the ADD/sex addict sets a vicious cycle in motion. Despite endless hours looking at cybersex, no amount is ever enough. Sex addicts/cybersex addicts are rarely sated and live daily with a sense of unsatisfied longing.

Mood and Emotion

There are problems with mood and emotion regulation and stabilization in ADD and sex addicts. ADD/sex addicts often say they live on emotional roller coasters - the need for risk and intensity in life and in sexuality is ever-present. For the ADDer, feeling states fluctuate with extreme alterations in the highs and lows over hour or even minutes. Maintaining emotions on an even keel is an intricate process involving fine adjustments by different parts of the brain and nervous system. Since setbacks throw ADDers off balance easily, they may try to adjust their instability with a sex/internet binge to balance mood and brain chemistry. The release of endorphins and dopamine from sex temporarily settles the physical, emotional and biochemical roller-coaster that many ADDers experience on a daily basis.

Distractibility

The ADD mind drifts hither and yon. It daydreams, wanders and drifts among loosely and tenuously connected thoughts, often moving to sexual fantasies that quell its restless energy. This is the famous "distractibility" of ADD. An ADDer might engage in sexual fantasies when he should be working. The radio in the ADD brain seems to have a malfunctioning scan button that won't let him switch channels efficiently. The sex addict's solution is to stay tuned to one channel only and it is usually sexual fantasy to which the channel is set. Once he's in his compulsive, rigid focus, it's hard for him to turn off the scan button to redirect. Hence, distractibility is not the only problem; ADDers can also have problems with hyper focusing, or over focusing. Once the person's attention is captured, he can stay engaged with what he's doing almost endlessly. Some may not be able to pay attention; ADD sexual compulsives usually can't stop paying attention. Hours and hours go by, chores don't get done, children and spouse are neglected, books go unread, the glory of the sound of music is muted. This type of erotic hyper attention can also take its toll in exhaustion, fatigue, and sometimes failing health.

The over- persistence of the sexual compulsive can make switching gears out of the "erotic haze" very difficult. Although this type of self-absorption makes productive/creative work and interpersonal relationships impossible, refocusing is painful. Going from one task that involves excitement, risk, mystery, intensity, soothing and escape is excruciating when taking out the garbage or paying the bills is called for.

Another factor that contributes to sexual addiction for ADDers is that many people with ADD have defective sensory filters that make them experience the world as a barrage to the senses -- noises, sights and smells rush in without barriers or protection. When you live with ADD, you may be constantly bombarded with input that others may not even notice. This assault on the senses often creates feelings of intense anxiety and irritation that can trigger sexual acting out. The comfort of the "erotic haze" on the internet or the soothing experience with an escort can ameliorate these incessant barrages of sensory stimuli to the ADD brain.

Impaired Social Skills

Some ADDers have experienced the negative impact of ADD on social adjustment. Many are shy and were not particularly popular in school, especially if learning disabilities have been in the picture. Social ostracizetion has been part of the childhood of many ADDers. As adults, many ADDers have to work very hard to interact effectively in social and work situations. The development of social skills is more an art than a science because we must learn to read the ever-changing reactions of others. If deficient selective attention interferes with paying attention to social cues in order to listen and respond empathically, the ADDer may feel extremely ill at ease. How much easier to go to a chat room to enter into an eroticized communication where sexuality can be used as a surrogate for real social interactions.

Shame

Many ADD children grew up in families in which put-downs, disapproval, personal attacks and threats of abandonment were commonplace events. Punishment and frustration from teachers and taunts from peer groups added to a sense of worthlessness. As an adult, the ADD child judges himself mercilessly and often tries to be perfect in a desperate attempt to shield his shame. He feels deeply ashamed of being "different" due to ADD as well as of being a sexual compulsive - a "deviant", if he becomes one. Chronic, relentless shame is devastating. Mired in feelings of worthlessness, defectiveness and despair, he is full of doubt about his very validity.

Shame and sex addiction are natural partners. The more intense the pain of self-hatred, the stronger the drive to find a sexual behavior that offers relief from internal pain and emptiness. For the sex addict, the answer to his inner problems lay outside himself in the "magic" of sexual desire, for or from, another. He confuses sexual desirability with self-acceptance. He is trying to fill the void that has been at least partially created by shame. He simply cannot bear feeling empty inside.

ADD temper problems or problems with rage may also stem from this chronic shame. A rageful person is desperate to keep others far enough away so they won't see his sense of defectiveness. A shamed person can only think to defend himself from real or imagined attacks by cruelly attacking the other person. And rage works. It drives people away and so protects the person from revealing his shame. But this device of using rage to keep people away is very damaging to a person's self-esteem. Rage breaks the connection between people and so increases the shamed person's shame. A rage/shame spiral can result. Social isolation lends itself to engrossment in sexual fantasy as a way to ameliorate lonliness.

The person who is shame-based sees himself as deeply and permanently flawed. He "knows" he is not like other persons. He "knows" he is different. He "knows" he is so bad he is beyond repair. He "knows" he will never be able to join others in a world of productivity, balance, self-respect and pride.

Shame and Perverse Sexuality

An early-life sense of shame for being "different" and fear of abandonment can influence the sexual development of an ADD child. Parents who may have been unstable themselves and who had no knowledge of the special needs of an ADD child, may create a shame-based home environment. The messages that the ADD child who has chronic behavior problems, hyperactivity, aggressiveness and learning disabilities receives at home may include:

You are not good;
You are not good enough;
You don't belong;
You are deficient and disappoint us.
You are not worthy of love.

Shame and sexuality become closely connected. Children shamed early in life may become sexually compulsive or develop perverse fantasies as a way to feel better about themselves. Fetishism may occur. Sadomasochistic fantasies and enactments may become paramount. Exhibitionism may be developed and acted on.

Exhibitionism can easily be a chosen perversion for the person who is shame-based. The person who is shamed, instead of hiding, calls attention to himself. He may expose himself in public, in an automobile or by standing in a window. The ADD child may have suffered from a lack of recognition of his real and valid feelings, wants and needs by parents and teaches who expected him to be other than the way he was. The exhibitionist seeks to redress this lack of recognition. He also uses his perversion as a strategy for dealing with shame by displaying what he really wants to hide - himself.

Sadomasochistic fantasies and enactments are common among shame-based people who have difficulty imagining that relationships can include mutual respect, dignity and pride. People who have grown up with shame, like many ADD people, often believe that fulfilling, exciting relationships must be shame-based. Men pay hundreds of dollars to see dominatrixes who physically humiliate them and repeatedly tell them something is wrong with them. The submissive man, fearing abandonment, tries to please the "mistress" by becoming whoever she wants him to be, no matter how humiliating or de-humanizing her demands may be. The reasoning is such: "If anyone saw the real me, they would be revolted. I must please the mistress by being a person she would be proud of." Pleasing the dominant parental figure is a way on undoing the pain of having a parent that couldn't be pleased. The S&M enactment thus turns trauma into triumph because the masochistic man succeeds in pleasing his dominant partner.

Self-abuse is a common result of shame. Here, the person who is deeply shamed engages in masochistic behaviors that damage him. Seeking out the services of a dominatrix who may beat, whip and verbally humiliate him is one such way of self-abuse.

The other side of the S&M coin is the desire to humiliate and administer pain to others. Shame is a threat to a person's basic sense of being. The shamed person feels small weak, vulnerable and exposed. He may find this self-hatred to be unendurable and in order to survive psychologically, he transfers his hatred on to others, treating them with distain and contempt.

Realistically, the people they are talking to should already know this information and parents should restrict their kids from talking to anyone that they do not know personally. Of course, this is not easy and friends of friends always seem to make their way into their world. Teach your kids that probing questions like this need to raise a flag with them.

Use this example:

If you were in the mall, and a complete stranger walked up to you and asked how old you were and where you lived would you just give them that information? Of course not. Strangers online are no different than strangers offline. Use caution when you're dealing with people you don't know.

Remind them that inappropriate questions such as: "what color are your panties?" or "what is your bra size?" will not be tolerated and then end the conversation immediately. Ask your kids to inform you about inappropriate questions like this. But, we know in the real world, your kids will probably never tell you any of this, mainly because they do not want you to take their Internet away. This is one reason software is so important. You need to know the things you're not being told, you should know if your child is being propositioned online, or if someone is asking them inappropriate questions or bullying them. Kids do not want to loose their online social life so they will protect it at all cost.

By talking to them and giving them examples of what is not acceptable, hopefully, they will be mature enough to handle the situation and if you are really lucky they may even tell you. Know who your kids are online:

Who are your kids hanging out with online? What kind of language are they using?

Pain is pain is pain. Right. Wrong, if you are referring to pain among Chinese immigrants suffering from cancer and other debilitating physical illnesses. An article appearing in the Winter 2008 edition of The Pain Practitioner, by Lara Dhingra, PhD., reveals some upsetting yet important information for health professionals and the public at large to understand. In this land of opportunity and free will, this population is often restricted by their own cultural, psychological and family-related beliefs as well as attitudes imposed upon them due to their sociodemographic status.

"Chinese immigrants diagnosed with cancer are at high risk for pain and symptom burden." Studies show that this population of Americans present many barriers to receiving adequate treatment and pain control. "Among elderly ethnic Chinese adults, barriers to care may include low English proficiency...; limited education, and poverty...." Many of them "suffer in isolation and may underreport pain due to specific cultural barriers...fears that their pain will be perceived as a burden to their family members and deeply-rooted values and beliefs of stoicism and fatalism which inhibit pain expression, particularly for men."

Chinese culture believes in Buddhism and Confucian philosophy which teaches them, especially men, to be stoic. Revealing and admitting to pain publicly is a sign of weakness and humiliation. Even the diagnosis of cancer is associated with shame. "In traditional Buddhist and Confucian belief: To live with pain, is to see and understand the world as it really is." Chinese patients tend to prefer their own Traditional Chinese Medicine and other complementary and alternative treatments such as herbal remedies, acupuncture and Chinese massage. These patients often believe that pain indicates that the disease has progressed and may refuse to take medication to suppress the pain.

Chinese cancer patients, unable to freely talk about their illness and pain, may also suffer from severe stress, which can increase pain and interfere with control of symptoms. They also may not seek medical help until they have reached an advanced stage of their illness. As the largest Asian subgroup in American (3.6 million people), about 50% of them "are medically underserved, poorly acculturated, and economically disadvantaged." Preliminary results of a current 2 year study of patients in Chinatown, Manhattan, NYC, indicates that the highly effective pain medications available are not being adequately given to this minority population.

Solutions are simple but not easy. There is a need for "comprehensive and systematic assessment of pain and symptoms in ethnic Chinese cancer patients" as well as "a need to identify barriers and facilitators to effective pain and symptom care." Letting a Child Be a Child - An Unscheduled Summer

This summer my husband and I have decided to let our 13-year old son have some down time. Most prior summers we have had him scheduled for a variety of activities such as camp, sports practices, and visits with relatives. His summers were so full that they just flew by for him - and for us.

So this summer he is only scheduled for a 2-week daytime drama program and our week of family vacation. No organized sports, no camp away from home, and only a few visits with other family.

When we told him about this arrangement, he was angry and almost cried. "What was he going to do all summer?! Just sit around the house and be bored?" We told him that whether he would be bored or not was entirely up to him.

That's the point of our decision for him this summer. Because he has always had everything scheduled for him, I don't think my son understands what to do with himself when he's not scheduled for something.

During the school year, he has school, and sports practice three days a week, and homework and school projects. Even many of his weekends are filled well ahead of time with sports events. Compared to what I can remember having as a child, he has relatively little down time to be alone and just sit and think, or read, or draw, or listen to music. I've noticed that when he's faced with unscheduled time, he doesn't quite know what to do with himself.

So this summer is going to be a time for him to learn. We live in a semi-rural area, so he can go ride his bike. He can walk or ride down to the park and go swimming. He can set a chair in the back yard and spend the morning reading a book. He can take a walk in the woods and maybe get an appreciation for the calm energy that nature and solitude can bring (okay, maybe he won't learn that for another 20 years, if ever).

We hope it's also a time for him to learn more responsibility. He can wake up whenever he wants in the morning, but he's going to have to get his own breakfast and lunch. He'll have a list of tasks or chores to complete each day to keep getting his allowance. And if he wants to earn some additional money, he can work with Dad a few days a week. The cable and the internet will be off during the day so he won't be able to spend his days surfing the Web or zoned out for hours in front of the tv.

I also have to admit that my husband and I are looking forward to having more of our own down time from this arrangement this summer. Fewer hours spent in the car carting him from one place to another. No need to do all the shopping that goes along with getting prepared for camp. Fewer places that we have to be at a certain time. More time to just enjoy our family during the all-too-short summer months.

I remember summers from my childhood when I was free to just enjoy the summer and the unscheduled time away from school. My parents didn't send me to camp and I can't say that I missed out on anything by not going. I had free time to learn what to do with myself when no one else was telling me what to do.

Children can't learn these lessons if they don't have enough unscheduled time to themselves. We live in a hectic and often over-scheduled society, and I think as parents we sometimes we need to step back so our children have the time they need to just be children. Often, you can observe in small children the tendency to power over others. Then, hopefully, life teaches children the other two ways to seek power.

When you look for "power with" others, it means that you are able to work cohesively with a group of people to advance toward a common goal. Many winning sports teams display this "power with" concept, as well as effective work teams and even fully functioning families. "Power with" others can be a very satisfying way of meeting one's power needs.

The final way to meet one's need for power is "power within" oneself. This is generally seen as a need for pride or competence. Those with a high power need who meet it through power within methods like to always do their best. They may seem to be perfectionistic but producing their best is very need satisfying to them.

In relationships, this power need accounts for workaholism, people who always need to control everything around them and a low degree of tolerance for imperfection in others. The power need has a big influence in interpersonal relationships.

The fourth need to discuss is the need for freedom. People with a high need for freedom are independent and like to do things their own way. High freedom need people generally don't like rules---particularly ones that don't make sense. They also value their time alone. They like to do what they want, when they want.

There is usually an inverse relationship between the love & belonging and the freedom needs. When a person has a high need for love & belonging, he or she typically has a lower need for freedom and vice versa. Of course, there are exceptions but typically there is an opposite relationship between the two.

The last of Choice Theory's basic human needs is fun. Fun seems pretty straightforward but there are some subtleties to it that are necessary to understand. There are basically three kinds of fun. There is the loud, energetic kind of fun that people might get from physical activity and parties, for example. There is the quiet, relaxing kind of fun that might be enjoyed by fishing, lying in a hammock on a warm summer's day or reading for pleasure. Then there is learning as fun.

Now, I'm not talking about when you learned algebra! For most of us that wasn't fun but I am talking about learning something you are interested in that has useful application for you. For me, the best example is when I learned how to downhill ski and made it the first time down the slope without falling and getting snow down my jacket, up my pant legs and various other places! It is the sheer joy of learning something that interests you. Everyone has various ways of meeting their fun needs and it is these differences that can drastically affect your satisfaction in your relationship.

It is not always true that in order for your relationship to succeed, you must have equal or almost equal need strengths in all five needs. For some needs, it is best when one of you is high and one of you is low in that need.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task force program exists under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Justice, as a portion of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). This program trains individual states and government entities to set up their own task forces to combat cyber crimes against our most vulnerable of citizens, our children.

At its conception, New York Senator Hillary Clinton asked congress for funding of $25 million to get the program rolling. The ICAC Task Force Program was set up to help State and local law enforcement agencies augment and strengthen their investigative response to predators who use the Internet, online communication systems, or other computer technology to sexually exploit children. 46 Regional Task Force Agencies currently make up the program. Those agencies are relatively evenly spread across the nation, and the majority of states are represented.

Law enforcement has long been aware that the naiveté and trusting natures of most children make them easy targets for predators. Teenagers, while older and a few years wiser, remain vulnerable to victimization. These governing agencies know that more than 77 million kids are online today. They also realize that the nature of the Internet presents a never before faced complexity to investigating crimes, collecting evidence, identifying and apprehending offenders, and assisting child victims and their families.

One big reason for this is the anonymity of the Internet. Unless there is viable evidence that a person committed an online crime, the argument could be raised that "someone else" either hacked into the accused person's accounts or used his computer while they were a visitor in the accused person's home. Another reason for this is that the crimes often cross several jurisdictions, and the victim and the perpetrator are often separated geographically.

Predators can and do travel hundreds of miles to different states and countries to engage in sexual acts with children they met over the Internet. Many of these cases involve local, state, federal, and international law enforcement entities in multiple jurisdictions.

The national Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force provides training to the state and local branches of the ICAC, so that they are better equipped to handle this escalating online problem. Some of the training courses include the Investigative Techniques Training Program, the Child Sex Offender Accountability Training Program, and the Undercover Chat Investigations Training Program.

Each local Internet Crimes Against Children task force is composed of federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel. Federal and local prosecution officials participate as well, as do local educators and service providers such as mental health professionals. The local task forces serve as valuable regional resources to assist parents, educators, prosecutors, law enforcement personnel, and others who work on child victimization issues.
